About

I’m Jim Spencer — a software engineer who likes to own the full stack, including the hardware it runs on. I’d rather run something myself on a machine in the basement than rent it from a cloud, and I’d rather understand why something broke than replace it blindly.

What’s here

This is the public corner of a larger personal knowledge base. Everything published here lives in a dedicated public/ folder; the rest of the vault (unfinished notes, financial details, hardware receipts, dashcam clips) stays private and offline. The goal is a small, honest digital garden — finished things, curated for someone else to read.

How it’s built

  • Generator: Quartz v5 — renders Obsidian-flavored markdown directly into a static site.
  • Hosting: a Docker container on a UGREEN NAS (ARM64), behind a Cloudflare Tunnel. No port forwarding, no public home IP exposed.
  • Publishing: git push to the vault repo triggers a rebuild — push-to-deploy.
  • Source: the public content is a curated subset of a private Obsidian vault.
